PeekaBOOK Review: The Mind of the Leader by Rasmus Hougaard & Jacqueline Carter (Worksheet provided)

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

What do leaders do?

Leadership is complex and ever-changing. A good leader encourages each member of their team to develop their special leadership skills and to act with passion and independence. Leaders provide direction and support for others and themselves to act morally to advance.

In addition, they build and coach their teams to become ever more effective at accomplishing the vision, whether directly or indirectly. The goal of a leader is to enable their team to develop their leadership skills. They do this by developing a motivating vision, inspiring others to work toward it, and inspiring themselves. Cultivate a group of creative and highly motivated leaders dedicated to realizing a shared goal.

It can be very challenging to strike the right balance between living meaningful lives and making a difference in the lives of others in today's society. The secret to navigating this challenge and a great leadership responsibilities skill is to maintain your authenticity and grounding.

How to become a better leader through The Mind of the Leader by Rasmus Hougaard & Jacqueline Carter?

Leaders need to comprehend what is truly important to people if they want to create truly thriving organizations. Everyone wants to be content. All of us desire to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive impact on the lives of others. People who feel fulfilled when they leave the office each day are more likely to want to return, concentrate on challenging tasks and put in hard work.

As you become more adept at tuning into what is happening right now and selecting a response as opposed to reacting as it occurs, you will develop your capacity for mindful leadership. The leader is the person who practices mindfulness in everyday situations and uses the state of presence to make assertive decisions and deal with conflicts and uncertainty.

Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter provide leaders with a clear and organized method in The Mind of the Leader. One of the reasons they wrote this book was to help boost employee engagement and develop work environments that are more open-minded to the relational requirements of the modern workplace.

The book does more than just outline the issue; it also suggests a radical but doable fix. To address the leadership crisis, organizations must prioritize people in their strategy. They must train executives and managers to lead with three core mental qualities: mindfulness, selflessness, and compassion. Here's what we've peeked from the book (based on our interpretation):

1. Observe and learn your surroundings

Leaders need to be sensible with their team members. People who practice mindfulness become more selfless, and people who practice selflessness become more compassionate. In turn, more compassion makes us more mindful and selfless.

Compassion is often mistaken for softness, but nothing could be less true. Compassion is not about giving in to other people. Compassion requires courage and strength to sometimes have difficult conversations or make tough decisions.

Leaders can create a sense of value by listening to their teams and expressing how much they appreciate them. They can empower teams to see the vision for themselves and take action to make it a reality when they prioritize empathy and recognize the contributions of their team members. Putting themselves (leaders) in their team members' shoes also aids leaders in addressing important issues and offering solutions.

2. Set team goals that everyone can agree on

There is no denying the significance of setting goals at work to help an organization grow better. The goal is to improve with each passing day. Perhaps leaders can start by examining the company's strengths and weaknesses by establishing a goal. This way it'd be easier to address the problem in a team.

Make sure that the goals are achievable and agreeable to everyone on the team; open communication must always be encouraged. It will be fair and possibly create a cooperative team and also allow you to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each team member.
