Updated: Sep 13, 2022

What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?

Have you ever heard the term emotional intelligence (EQ)? Its importance is gaining traction as an important element in leadership through the lens of how we recognize and manage the emotions of ourselves and others.

In our quest to learn more about Emotional Intelligence, we recently reviewed a book written by Dann J White and would love to share some of our thoughts with you. Here goes!

ABOUT THIS BOOK:

Emotional Intelligence and Mastering the Art of Conversation: Your Self Aid Guide to Build Emotional Agility and Improve Your Social Skills For Happiness and Confidence in Career and Life (by Dann J White)

Have you ever wondered what makes some people so fascinating, convincing, and likable when making conversation? These people are considered achievers who are masters of conversation and have high emotional skills. They're so well prepared and focused on what to say and how to say it. This book emphasizes the significance of developing your emotional and social skills with 13 chapters and has the potential to help leaders become better leaders.

If you want to learn more about EQ but haven't yet developed a plan for improving your EQ, this book is a good place to start. It trains people to strike up a conversation as a team leader in real life! A step-by-step guide to practicing emotion development. You can learn everything about EQ and how it can help you improve your interactions with your colleagues.

In this book, the author provides guidelines to become a more sensible leader by being prudent (self-aware) around staff and colleagues.

Self-awareness is the starting point for social awareness and self-management.

Self-awareness is the starting point for social awareness and self-management. It is a conscious reflection of one's identity, appearance, emotions, drives, and aspirations. EQ has become increasingly important in fields other than psychology, such as education and business.

Why is EQ essential for leaders?

It's a methodological approach to emotion that recognizes emotions can affect our actions and those around us (both positively and negatively) and that we need to be able to control our own emotions and support the emotions of others. It is proven that EQ can help people understand others' emotions and manage them effectively, which can make coping with difficult people and situations at work much easier.

How do EQ works?

Emotions are always a part of the thinking process. It's important to remember this when trying to make decisions because emotions often lead to better options than purely logical thinking. Emotional intelligence is essential for good interpersonal communication. Understanding and controlling our own emotions (and those of others) enables us to be more productive both in our personal and professional lives.

The basis of EQ is an internal loop. The first step is to become conscious of your emotions and attitude. It progresses through a deep understanding of management and self-control. Through that, it'll help people connect with others' emotions after the initial cycle of self. Emotional intelligence was not popularised until the late 1990s. It mentions emotional intelligence as a method of recognizing, comprehending, choosing, experiencing, and responding.

Is it appropriate for a leader to apply EQ at the office?

People with high EQ are not only good at visualizing other people's emotions but also at understanding their own. The ability to recognize and empathize is a key component of emotional intelligence. Many elements have been found in this book to help leaders to handle stress around an organization. These elements include controlling conflict, morale support and interactions, and establishing stability, continuity, and unity. So yes, managing emotions around the office can be more effortless for leaders if they apply EQ appropriately, especially in stressful situations. These are some examples:

  • Providing and receiving feedback (worksheet provided below)

  • Sticking to strict deadlines

  • Lack of resources

  • Managing changes - environment

  • Dealing with knocks and negligence

3 Reasons to Fall in Love with Emotional Intelligence through a leader's lense

Some experts believe that having a high IQ isn't the only key to a successful life, as having the ability to understand and process information quickly is also important. There are things you can do to improve your emotional and social intelligence, and here's how:

1. The Power Of EQ

Individuals differ in their personalities, wants needs, and ways of expressing their emotions. Navigating this requires prudence and cunning, especially if one wishes to be a great leader. This is where emotional intelligence theory comes in handy. The power of emotions through EQ is the ability, skill, or self-perceived ability to identify, assess, and manage one's own, others, and groups' emotions.

Companies should offer their leaders at the office to formulate and monitor a workplace culture that values fluidity, responsibility, precision, and commitment by understanding what emotions are. The good news is that EQ can be learned and practiced.

2. The Importance of EQ

Modern society lacks fundamental social skills, which increases the prevalence of social anxiety and unprompted introversion. We can manage our emotions in demanding or overwhelming circumstances thanks to EQ. We can also have difficult conversations without upsetting other people and strengthen our bonds with those we care about.

It is highly recommended to increase one's credibility and confidence through emotional intelligence. Luckily, EQ is a skill that can help ones harness the emotions that suppress trust, teamwork, and concentration throughout one's organization. It can also help leaders resolve conflicts and inspire others and create a psychologically safe environment in the office.

3. Self-awareness through EQ

This book contains excellent advice for understanding your emotions, improving your relationships, and increasing mental and emotional self-awareness to improve self-management. Both anger and jealousy are strong, erratic emotions that are challenging to control.

Leaders must pay more attention to their surroundings and be more aware. Take command and focus on self-awareness to achieve better results. Using emotional intelligence, leaders can help soothe someone by transforming hot emotions into cool emotions.
